Providing Therapy for Children and
Families Through Play Therapy

Children often find it challenging to recognize and work through feelings and manage their behavior.  In fact, these skills are difficult for many adults. Like all aspects of childhood, children need to be taught about emotions in order to understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Therapy for children can help teach these connections.  The struggle with big emotions and significant life events can lead to multiple issues. Some of these include anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem. Others include anger, problems at school, social withdrawal, avoidance, and acting out. And, play is a child’s natural language. So, play therapy and expressive therapy can be incredibly helpful in working through a variety of issues.

We know how powerless it can feel when your child is struggling and you don’t know how to help.  Once you decide to seek professional help, it can be scary. Not to mention putting your precious little one in the hands of a child therapist that you don’t personally know and trust. But, seeking help for your family is not a weakness. In fact, searching for a child therapist is a sign of your strength as a parent. So there is no need to navigate these parenting challenges alone. Often taking this first step can be intimidating. But, we are here to support you through this challenging time.

Parenting challenges come in many forms.

What is Play Therapy and How Does it Help?

Play is the natural language of children. Play therapy is a form of treatment that helps children to use this natural language to “play out” life situations. Through play therapy, children can play out their feelings, reactions, and develop solutions. Also, we use games, figures, puppets, art supplies, and sand trays to process events, learn new skills, and problem solve. Play therapy teaches children how to identify and recognize their feelings, and develop their own solutions to problems. Play Therapy helps children to:

  • Recognize, label, and express feelings in a healthy way
  • Work through and process trauma
  • Develop trust and attachment
  • Build empathy and coping skills
  • Develop creative solutions to problems
  • Take responsibility for their behaviors
  • Develop respect and acceptance of self and others
  • Increase and practice impulse control
  • Discover strengths and increase self esteem
  • Develop anger management skills
