FAQs about EMDR Consultation and EMDR Certification
What is an EMDR consultant?
An EMDR consultant is an experienced and credentialed EMDR practitioner who has received extra training to consult with other EMDR therapists. EMDR consultants play a key role in ensuring high standards of practice and quality assurance in EMDR therapy.
What does it mean to be EMDR certified?
EMDR certification is a professional credential that shows a mental health clinician has completed the necessary training and met specific criteria to use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in their practice. This certification is granted by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) and needs to be renewed every two years. Though you don’t need certification to practice EMDR therapy, having it can reassure patients that you’ve achieved a high professional standard.
What’s the difference between being EMDR trained and EMDR certified?
EMDR Trained Clinician:
When you complete an EMDR Basic Training, which includes at least 50 hours of lectures, practicum, and consultation, you become an EMDR Trained Clinician. After finishing this training, you’ll receive a completion certificate from your training provider and can join EMDRIA as a Full Member, provided you meet the membership requirements.
EMDR Certified Clinician:
EMDR certification is a formal credential granted by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). It signifies that a clinician has not only completed the approved training but also meets specific criteria, indicating a higher level of proficiency and qualification in using EMDR therapy in clinical practice. Being EMDR certified means you are recognized as an EMDR Certified Therapist by EMDRIA.
What does the EMDR consultation process include?
EMDR consultation is a collaborative process between mental health clinicians designed to help you learn and enhance your skills in EMDR therapy. Here’s what the consultation can cover:
EMDR therapy phases: Understanding the eight phases of EMDR therapy, and the AIP, and 3 prong models.
Treatment planning: Discussing case conceptualization, target selection, and sequencing.
Client readiness: Addressing issues like burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.
EMDR protocol: Integrating the protocol into specific cases, working through blocks, and handling stuck points.
Clinical work: You might be asked to share examples of your clinical work, such as video or audio recordings, transcripts, or case presentation forms.
The goal of EMDR consultation is to boost your confidence in using EMDR skills and reduce the risk of problematic use. It also helps you develop creative ways to integrate EMDR therapy into your practice, ultimately benefiting your clients. EMDR consultation is all about supporting you, the EMDR-trained therapist, in effectively using the EMDR standard protocol. Through this process, you’ll fine-tune your skills, gain support and confidence, and grow professionally within the EMDR model.
What are the goals of EMDR consultation?
The main aim of EMDR consultation is to support you in using standard EMDR therapy with your clients. During these consultations, your consultant will offer guidance and feedback to help you refine your practice.
It’s important to note that consultation is different from supervision. You remain fully responsible and autonomous when it comes to decisions about your clients’ treatment. Your consultant is there to provide insights and feedback on how you’re applying EMDR therapy, without directing client treatment.
The consultant’s primary role is to assess how well you implement the eight-phase protocol and three-pronged approach of standard EMDR therapy. They will also help you identify when modifications to the standard approach are needed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of your treatment.
How do I become certified in EMDR?
To become certified, one must:
- Be fully trained in an EMDRIA Approved EMDR training course and have received a document of course completion
- Be licensed or certified in their profession with a minimum of two years experience in their field
- Complete an additional 20 hours of consultation in EMDR by an EMDRIA Approved Consultant or Consultant in Training (CIT)
- 10 hours can be group consultation and the other 10 must be individual
- Conduct a minimum of 50 clinical sessions with at least 25 different clients in which EMDR is utilized
- Complete 12 hours of continuing education in EMDR to apply and every two years to maintain an active certification status
